ST STEPHEN’S UNITED CHURCH
The Delta Heritage Advisory Commission awarded its 2010 scholarship to C.J. Pentland of Delta Secondary School for his photographic and written submission entitled "The Cozy Little Church". C.J.’s words speak for many of us involved in this historic congregation.

 

The Cozy Little Church

"St. Stephen's United, the small and historical church in the heart of East Delta, not only has played a key part of the community for many years, but also plays a very important role in the lives of my family and my grandparents, the Patons. This place of worship has been around since 1891. My family has been in attendance almost every Sunday for many of those years, and also has helped maintain the heritage building. With the church being a critical part of East Delta in its early days when it neighboured the elementary school, it is no wonder that many think highly of this building, with myself being one of them. It has a lot of meaning to me, as it has been the site of my baptism, my confirmation, and my parent's marriage, and I personally feel honoured to be linked to this great heritage site. On Christmas Eve, the special and unique service attracts many members of the community, even though they are not part of the congregation. Every single service though is so relaxed and personalized, as the congregation is like a family, one who comes together every Sunday to be comforted by each other's presence in its intimate sanctuary. That is just one of the many reasons why this homey little church will always have a place in my heart, just as it always has been in the hearts of many Delta residents."

St. Stephen’s United Church has been a sign and servant of God’s love in East Delta since 1891. For most of that time we have been part of one Pastoral Charge with Ladner United Church and very active supporters of First United Church in the inner city of Vancouver, other United Church of Canada Mission Projects, and local Delta projects.

We worship each Sunday at 10:00a.m from the Sunday after Labour Day through the end of June. Our children join us for the first part of the service, then move “upstairs” for their own program. Following worship on the second Sunday of each month we lead our friends at the Delta View hospital in a simple hymn-sing. And on the third Sunday of each month all who wish remain after worship for refreshments and visiting.
