Meet the Music Minister, Alan C. Whitmore

Alan Whitmore and his spouse, Denise Soulodre, are very happy to be part of the Ladner United Church family. This is a welcoming congregation and we have been very blessed with the warmth of that welcome.

Alan was born into the United Church – a PK – or Preacher’s Kid. His father was a UCC minister in various communities within Saskatchewan and BC. Alan was born in Summerland, in the Okanagan, and lived in Port Alberni, Nelson and finally Victoria where he graduated from high school. He received his BMus from the University of BC in honours voice and piano. Along the way he also received an LRSM from the Royal School of Music, London, and certification in Campanology (the art of bell ringing) from Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ. Further study in organ and choral conducting occurred in Germany and the United States.

Alan has been a music educator for over 45 years, maintaining a private studio of piano, voice, organ and theory students. He also taught at Cariboo College and the Academy of Music, Kamloops. Many of his students have gone on for further training in Canada, the US and Europe and have become professional musicians with international reputations.

As a church musician, Alan has over 50 years of experience in various denominations, including the United Church of Canada, the Anglican Church in Canada, the United Methodist Church (USA) and the Episcopal Church (USA). He has developed and led multi-level choirs, handbell groups, bands and orchestras and plays both organ and piano. One of the highlight of his career was Director of Music Ministries at Centenary United Methodist Church, New Bern, NC where he directed/facilitated a very rewarding music ministry of 15 choirs and groups, totalling over 350 musicians. He was also the artistic consultant and tonal designer for the new Letourneau pipe organ purchased by that congregation. Another highlight was the position of Director of Music Ministry at Trinity United Church, Kitchener, ON where he was responsible for an active music program which included professional recordings of 3 exciting events about congregational song and choral music.

For 10 years Alan was Music and Liturgy Editor of Wood Lake Books, Inc., Canada’s largest non-denominational church publishing company. While there he coordinated the start of the LicenSing copyright program and was editor of 5 hymnals and songbooks. He was also very active presenting workshops on the incorporation of music into liturgy. For 1 year, he was Interim Coordinator of Worship and Music at the national head office of the United Church, where some of his duties included staff liaison for General Council and facilitator for 2 annual “Worship Matters” conferences.

Alan is looking forward to his ministry at LUC and welcomes all to become part of the music ministry in whatever way suits their talents and interest – from participant to listener. All are welcome. Please do not hesitate to contact him through the church office or by email at music@ladnerunited.org.
